MUMBAI: The city police arrested a 21-year-old UPSC aspirant from Surat in a case of extortion. The accused along with her associates allegedly collected information about men from a dating app and extorted Rs 30 lakh from a city businessman over 14 months.
The RAK Marg police recently arrested Laxmi Mandal, who originally hails from Jharkhand. Laxmi told police that she and another accused chatted with a businessman and later extorted money from him. Mandal told police that she is married and stays in Surat along with her husband. While her Instagram profile describes her as a video creator and rider, it also contains multiple videos of her riding a bike and driving a car.
The Police had in December arrested five persons – Chandramani Singh, Sonu Hela, Suraj Singh, Shubham Rai, and a woman Mouni Rai – all in their mid-20s from Kolkata for their alleged role in the crime.
A businessman’s wife got an FIR lodged after she noticed that he was frustrated and tense. She insisted on knowing what was troubling him. She brought her husband to the police station and an FIR was registered against one Raqueebul for extortion, extortion by putting a person in fear of death or grievous hurt and under sections of the IT Act. The businessman told police that Raqueebul had contacted him and said that he had hacked into his mobile phone and accessed his and his wife’s private photos, threatened to make them viral. He then extorted Rs 30 lakh, in 50 transactions. Police arrested five accused. There was no one with the name Raqueebul in the case, said police.
“During the probe, we found that Mouni Rai had submitted her Aadhar card details to the dating app and registered herself over there as an employee. She would get names and mobile numbers of customers from the dating app. She said that she got the businessman’s details from the website but the businessman denied this.We are verifying all the details,” the police said.
According to police, sustained interrogation, Mandal’s name cropped up. She along with Rai had been chatting with men and later threatened them for money, said police. Investigators have frozen more than Rs 10 lakh in different accounts operated by the accused. Police have seized 20 mobile phones, 89 SIM cards, three laptops, seven ATM cards and one bullet from the accused.
