The resumption of flights from Boryspil International Airport is a desirable but still unattainable goal.

Podoliak said that most of the significant positive changes would only be realistic if Russia begins to suffer a strategic defeat on the front line.

The resumption of flights at Boryspil International Airport is complicated by several challenges that Ukraine needs to cope with.

Quote from Podoliak: “It can be discussed, preparations can take place. And they are taking place, particularly at Boryspil. However, the security issues need to be more comprehensively and more fundamentally addressed.”

First of all there must be a decrease in the intensity of Russian air terror, he said.

“And you and I are very well aware that the intensity is not decreasing, despite the fact that, as the president says, a new stage of the war has begun,” Podoliak said.

Until Ukraine manages to resolve the security issue, it is difficult to talk about opening a new air transport hub.

“If the security issue can be resolved, then it will be possible to talk about particular logistics, including air transport logistics,” Podoliak emphasised.

Podoliak said agreements with partners are essential to increase the supply of the air defence systems Ukraine needs.

“I think there will be many different solutions here. And now, these solutions will have already been logistically completed somewhere. That means deliveries are already underway,” Podoliak clarified.

Ukraine also needs to analyse how Russia will use its forces for air attacks this winter: aircraft, drones, etc.

Background: Andrii Yermak, Head of the Ukrainian President’s Office, said on 1 December that he believes aircraft will soon be flying into and out of Boryspil Airport once again, since “now we can ensure the safety of this facility”.
