Return with a smile: SC to ‘serious’ AG | India News

Calling attorney general R Venkataramani as ‘Bhishma Pitamah’ of the bar, the SC on Friday asked him to make endeavours to persuade the Centre to implement its order in letter and spirit for timely appointment of judges and he assured the court to come out with a “reasonably good outcome”.
The hearing also witnessed lighter moments with a bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and A S Oka, which has given the onerous task of convincing the Centre to the AG, pointing out that unlike the last hearing Venkataramani was not smiling and wearing a serious expression this time.
Venkataramani assured the court that the issue was being discussed objectively at the highest level. He sought four weeks time to resolve the issues raised by the bench by holding consultation with the concerned authorities. Granting him time till February 3, the bench said, in a lighter vein, “Come back with a smile and with warrants of appointment”, indicating that by that time all pending recommendations for appointment of judges in SC and HCs would be cleared.
Given the task to convince the government to “follow the law” in view of tug of war between judiciary and the Centre on appointment of judges, the attorney said that efforts were being made for “fusion of different” points of view and to reduce“friction” . The court also asked the AG to advise the government not to object to names on the basis of his ideology if his integrity is not questionable.
