Police has arrested a man from Maharashtra`s Navi Mumbai township after he allegedly posed as a CBI officer and duped two persons of Rs 80 lakh under the pretext of helping them obtain land in Kolhapur, reported PTI on Wednesday.
As per the PTI report, the accused who is from Koparkhairne in Navi Mumbai, had worked as a driver with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on a contractual basis.
After his contract ended, he posed as an officer of the agency and cheated the two persons, CBD police station`s senior inspector Giridhar Gore said.
The accused met the victims, hailing from Kolhapur, at a government office in Navi Mumbai in April 2022 and claimed he could help them get 500 acres of forest land at Hazra in the district, he said.
To gain their confidence, he showed them a no objection certificate (NOC) of the forest department, said the PTI report. Additionally, he fabricated an order of a court in connection with the land, the official said.
The accused took around Rs 80 lakh from the two victims. He neither got them the land as promised nor refunded their money despite repeated reminders, he said.
The victims subsequently approached the police and filed a complaint.
The accused was arrested on Monday and booked under relevant provisions, the police added.
Maharashtra: Four booked for duping people of over Rs 1 crore in land deals in Navi Mumbai
The Navi Mumbai Police in Maharashtra has registered a case against four persons for allegedly cheating land buyers of more than Rs 1 crore in Navi Mumbai, police said on Sunday, reported the PTI.
Based on a complaint, the police on Saturday registered a first information report (FIR) against the accused under sections 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust) and other relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code, an official said, according to the PTI.
According to the police, the accused allegedly cheated nine persons of more than Rs 1 crore over the last eight years.
The accused offered land for sale at Mosare in Panvel and produced fabricated documents of agreement with the original owners of the plots, he said.
The police are probing the case, and no arrests have been made so far, the official said, the news agency reported.
