As the Maratha Kranti Morcha headed by Maratha activist Manoj Jarange Patil is headed for Mumbai, the Mumbai police has denied him the permission to go on the hunger strike in Azad Maidan. Manoj Jarange had given letter to police seeking permission for hunger strike in Mumbai`s Azad Maidan.
The Mumbai police said a huge number of Maratha`s will be coming to Mumbai and Azad Maidan only has capacity to hold 5 to 6 thousand protestors. It is said that Azad Maidan, which is reserved for agitation, does not have that much capacity
The police in its reply said that Mumbai is the economic capital of India and 60 to 65 lakh people commute to the city for work. The city also holds various national and international offices. The letter added that if the Maratha community protest rally enters Mumbai, the city`s daily traffic will be affected.
Jaranje has declared that he will go on hunger strike in Mumbai`s Azad Maidan from January 23 until the Maharashtra government agrees with his demand for Maratha community reservation and categorising the community as `Other Backward Class.` The government has said the survey is underway, however Jarange is firm on his protest.
International Corporation Park ground in Sector 29, Kharghar, Navi Mumbai has been suggested for the protest.
As Maratha quota activist proceeds his padyatra towards Mumbai that it will be through the Navi Mumbai, the police on Thursday. The Navi Mumbai police issued a traffic advisory and shared details of the routes to be avoided on January 25 in order to maintain a smooth flow of vehicular movements.
According to the Navi Mumbai Police`s traffic advisory, several routes have been diverted for traffic movements and alternate routes have been issued. The Navi Mumbai Police said, “Manoj Jarange Patil has started a walk from Jalna to Mumbai for Maratha reservation. As the said padayatra will also pass from the jurisdiction of Navi Mumbai Police on 25/01/24, a notification has been issued regarding the changes in regular traffic in the Navi Mumbai Police jurisdiction.”
Meanwhile, the Bombay High Court on Wednesday refused to restrain Maratha reservation activist Manoj Jarange from entering Mumbai with his supporters but asked the Maharashtra government to ensure that the city roads are not choked.
