Mumbai: Fire breaks out in slum near Bhayandar, some persons feared injured

A major fire broke out in a slum near Bhayandar in Maharashtra`s Thane district neighbouring Mumbai on Wednesday morning, destroying several huts and shops, officials said, reported news agency PTI.

Some persons were feared injured in the blaze, they said.

The fire started at around 6 am in the Azad Nagar slum near Bhayandar, Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) Commissioner Sanjay Katkar said, reported PTI.

Some explosions were heard in the locality, according to sources, reported PTI.

The occupants of huts and other residents of the locality ran out of their homes after the blaze erupted, said Katkar who was overseeing the rescue and relief work at the site, reported PTI.

As many as 24 fire engines were rushed to the spot and efforts were on to douse the blaze, the official said, reported PTI.

Many commercial establishments are located in the slum colony, he added, reported PTI.

In another incident, the Birhanmumbai Municipal Corporation on Tuesday said the city`s water supply has been partially restored as 14 out of 20 pumps have been made operational at Pise pumping station, where a fire broke out.

According to a civic official, the incident has impacted the water supply in the eastern part of eastern suburbs, as well as the water supply from Golanji, Fosbery, Raoli, and Bhandarwada reservoirs in the city.

Consequently, there will be no water supply in these areas for the next 24 hours. Additionally, the water supply pressure in the western suburbs and other parts of Mumbai may also be affected, said the official, reported ANI.

As per the civic official, the BMC administration has urged citizens to cooperate and utilize water resources judiciously since the prompt cooperation of residents is essential to mitigate the impact of the disruption and ensure that essential water services can be restored as swiftly as possible, reported ANI.
