Mumbai: 39-year-old police personnel ends his life at hospital

A 39-year-old Mumbai Police constable ended his life by jumping from the second floor of Nagpada Police Hospital. He was seeking a fitness certificate to return to duty after an 89-day medical leave. The Nagpada Police are investigating the incident after having registered an accidental death report to determine the motive behind this grave step.

Constable Kailas Gavali, stationed at the Worli local arms unit of Mumbai Police, took an 89-day medical leave. Formerly assigned to Mahim Police Station, his health prompted a transfer to the local arms unit. Upon returning, he visited the Worli office, where he needed a fitness certificate from Nagpada Police Hospital to resume duty. On January 12, he was admitted to the hospital for examination by doctors, according to the police.

“On Sunday morning, he entered the second-floor washroom, and jumped from its window, sustaining severe head injuries and significant blood loss. Staff rushed him to JJ Hospital, where he was admitted, but unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries during the treatment,” stated an officer.

Nagpada Police have filed an ADR and are investigating the incident to determine the factors that led the constable to take his own life. An official stated, “Initially, it seems he was battling depression related to his health and returning to duty after three months. We are obtaining statements from family members to understand the exact reasons.” Additionally, sources within the force revealed that a few years ago, Gavali had previously attempted suicide at a railway track.
