Maharashtra reports 58 new Covid-19 cases, one death

Maharashtra on Sunday reported 58 new Covid-19 cases and one while 64 patients have been discharged. The state`s recovery rate stands at 98.18 per cent, while the death rate is reported at 1.81 per cent.

The state has conducted 9310 Covid-19 tests on Sunday. Among them, 1740 were RT-PCR tests, and 7570 were RAT tests, resulting in a daily positivity rate of 0.62 per cent.

A state health department bulletin said that a total of 451 patients have been infected with JN.1 variant across various districts in the state. Pune leads with 189 cases, followed by Thane (89) and Mumbai (37).

Since January 1, 2023, a total of 151 Covid-19 deaths have been recorded in the state. Notably, 71.52 per cent of these deaths occurred in individuals above 60 years of age, and 85 per cent of the deceased had comorbidities.

The bulletin also includes hospital admission information as of January 20, 2024, revealing 439 active cases in the state. Of these, 407 cases (92.7 per cent) are under home isolation, while 32 cases (7.3 per cent) require hospital admission. Among the hospital admissions, 21 cases (4.8 per cent) are non-ICU, and 11 cases (2.5 per cent) are in ICU.

The weekly positive cases show a decreasing trend, with 441 cases reported in the most recent week (15-Jan to 21-Jan 2024), compared to 662 cases in the previous week.

As of January 21, 2024, there are 432 active Covid-19 cases in the state, with Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MCGM) leading with 130 active cases. Other districts and corporations have reported varying numbers of active cases.

Meanwhile, India has logged 290 fresh cases of Covid, while the number of active cases of the infection has been recorded at 2,059, the health ministry said on Sunday.

The number of daily cases had dropped to double-digits till December 5, 2023 but they again began to increase after emergence of a new variant and cold weather conditions.

A single day rise of 841 new cases were reported on December 31, 2023 which is 0.2 per cent of the peak cases reported in May 2021, official sources said.

Of the total active cases, a large majority of these (around 92 per cent) are recovering under home isolation.

“The currently available data suggests that the JN.1 variant is neither leading to an exponential rise in new cases nor a surge in hospitalisation and mortality,” the sources stated.

India has witnessed three waves of Covid-19 in the past with the peak incidence of daily new cases and deaths being reported in the Delta wave during April-June 2021. (With inputs from agencies)
