The South cyber cell police have apprehended a 20-year-old man from Madhya Pradesh after he allegedly defrauded Rs 90 lakh from the bank account of a 62-year-old man.
According to the police, the complainant, Mahesh Jhavar, is a resident of Pedder Road and works in the construction sector. He also dabbles in the stock market.
According to the police, Jhavar was at his office when he received a message about Rs 90 lakh being deducted from his account. He promptly contacted the employee managing his account, who, in turn, reached out to the bank’s relationship manager. It was then revealed that Rs 90 lakh had indeed been debited from Jhavar’s bank account.
Jhavar then complained to the south cyber cell regarding the alleged fraud. Jhavar mentioned that his bank account was linked to his mobile number on which he received the notification.
Following the complaint, the police initiated an investigation and it was revealed that the accused had hacked the complainant’s SIM card. Subsequently, the alleged accused had misused the generated OTPs (one-time passwords) to transfer the said amount.
Accordingly, they arrested Mukul Ashram Singh from Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. He had been booked by the police under the relevant sections of the IT Act.
