Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party has posted a historic victory in Gujarat, winning 153 seats and leading in another 3 in the 182-member state assembly. The Congress party finished second, winning 17 seats, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) that made its debut with a high-decibel campaign won 5 seats. Independents won three seats and the Samajwadi Party picked up one. The BJP not only beat its best showing till date – 127 seats in 2002, but also surpassed the record set by the Congress party in 1985, when it won 149 seats under the leadership of late Madhavsinh Solanki. Meanwhile, In Himachal Pradesh, the Congress pulled off a close victory in a tight contest with BJP, upholding the 37-year trend of the hill state’s revolving door politics. On the other hand, the Arvind Kejriwal-led party drew a blank. Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked voters of the hill state for their affection and support to the BJP and said his party will keep working to fulfil the aspirations of the state and raise people’s issues.
