The German Foreign Ministry has called the anti-Semitic riots that took place in Russia’s Dagestan unacceptable.

Details: The German Foreign Ministry described the events at the Makhachkala airport as “indescribable and unacceptable”.

“It is important that those involved are brought to justice and that the Russian authorities guarantee the safety of the Jewish community,” the Foreign Ministry spokesman said.

“We strongly condemn all forms of anti-Semitism and support the Jewish community,” he added. 

The European Commission has also condemned the anti-Jewish riots in Russia’s Dagestan.

NATO believes that these things are disadvantageous to the Kremlin and are one of the manifestations of the radicalisation of Russian society.

Background: 

  • On Sunday, 29 October, anti-Semitic protesters broke into the airport in Makhachkala (Dagestan, Russia) and tried to board a jet that had arrived from Tel Aviv, looking specifically for Jewish people.
  • In response to these events, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a large meeting with security officials, the prime minister and parliamentarians for Monday.
