Dog in Thane killed after biting explosive device thrown in open

A dog died after it bit an explosive device, which was probably meant for hunting, thrown in the open in Maharashtra`s Thane district, an official said on Friday, reported news agency PTI.

The incident took place at a farmhouse in Shahapur on Wednesday night, the official said, reported PTI.

The watchman of the farmhouse, Balu Damu Mahalunge (50), told the police a dog that stayed on the premises returned from outside carrying some object in its mouth, reported PTI.

The dog bit the object which exploded and killed the animal, he said. The watchman also told the police that another dog that lives at the farmhouse was injured earlier after biting into something that it had brought in from outside, the official said, reported PTI.

It is suspected that the explosive devices were left in the open, possibly intended for hunting wild animals.

The Shahapur police on Thursday registered a case under Indian Penal Code sections 429 (mischief by killing or maiming cattle or an animal) and 435 (mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to cause damage), he added, reported PTI.

In another incident, a 22-year-old plumber died after he fell into a lift duct at a construction site in Maharashtra`s Thane city, an official said on Friday, reported PTI.

In a complaint filed at the Kapurbawdi police station, a relative of victim Pradhyum Ashok Kumar said that he was working without any safety gear when the accident took place on January 30, reported PTI.

Kumar sustained serious injuries after he lost his balance and plunged into a lift duct filled with water. He was taken to a hospital where doctors declared him dead, the official said citing the complaint, reported PTI.

The police on Thursday registered a case against the building contractor at the site under Indian Penal Code section 304A (causing death by negligence), said the station house officer of the police station.
