Cyber Crime Cell gets call on its helpline 1930, foils fraud of Rs 3.70 cr

Mumbai Police on Monday said that it`s Cyber Crime Cell`s helpline number 1930 helped in foiling a cyber fraud of Rs 3.70 crore in 48 hours after it got a call from the victim.

According to the police, the cyber helpline number 1930, operated under the Crime Branch, thwarted an alleged cyber fraud attempt, saving a staggering amount of Rs. 3.70 crores within 48 hours of being reported to the officials.

The complainant, a victim of the fraud, reported to the helpline that she was contacted by alleged fraudsters on social media app, Instagram. The fraudsters enticed her to invest in the share market, promising double returns on her investment. An app was created to show the victim the purported benefit amount. However, when she attempted to withdraw the funds, she discovered that she had been deceived of amount in crores,” DCP Dr. D.S. Swamy said on Monday.

The police said, after receiving the information, the officials swung in action and launch an investigation in the matter. It was found that the funds had been transferred to a bank. An amount of Rs. 3.70 crores was frozen from various banks by filing a complaint on an online portal.

The 1930 helpline, plays a crucial role in freezing the amounts received by frauds. In 2023 alone, a total of Rs. 26,48,22,209/- from cyber fraud was frozen in various bank accounts, the police said.

“Our primary objective now is to apprehend the accused, and we have initiated contact with social media platforms to block the relevant accounts,” DCP Swamy said.
