Bapu’s Vidyapith may get non-Gandhian as chancellor for 1st time | India News


AHMEDABAD: For the first time in the 102-year history of Gujarat Vidyapith — founded by Mahatma Gandhi — a non-Gandhian and a serving governor of Gujarat is set to be appointed as the chancellor. “ The governing council of Gujarat Vidyapith on Tuesday decided unanimously to invite state g overnor Acharya Devvrat to be the next chancellor,” stated arelease issued on Tuesday night. The release was signed by in-charge registrar Nikhil Bhatt. The r elease a dded: “A Pratinidhi Mandal of v idyapith will meet him to extend the invitation. ” If he accepts, Devvrat will be eligible to hold the chancello r’s post for life even after he ceases to be the governor.
The resignation of Ela Bhatt as chancellor was accepted by the governing council on Tuesday. Bhatt is a Gandhian, a world-renow ned social activist, and founder of Sewa (Self Employed Women’s Association). Bhatt will officially step down on October 19.
The choice of Devvrat, who has an RSS background, may augur a paradigm shift i n the future of the institution, which is the only university in theworld established by Gandhiji.
On Tuesday, the governing council held a meeting that lasted 4 hours and 35 minutes. The exchanges were tense and sometimes edgy, sources said.
The vice-chancellor of vidyapith, Rajendra Khimani, had placed the appointment of Devvrat on the agenda. A majority of the 24 trustees voted i n his favour. Most of these trustees are teachers at vidyapith. Only six Gandhian trustees strongly opposed the choice, sources said.
“Gujarat Vidyapith has been adeemed university sin ce 1963. This is the first time that there wasn’t enough resistance to bureaucratic influences in selecting a chancellor,” said a trustee.
Previous chancellors have been Gandhiji and his aides such as Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Dr Rajendra Prasad, and Gandhians like Morarji Desai.
