Hubertus Heil, German Federal Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, believes that employers should hire Ukrainian refugees who have not yet managed to learn the German language at the proper level but have basic knowledge of it.

Details: Heil wants to employ refugees from Ukraine as soon as possible, which, according to him, requires “the willingness of employers to hire these people, even if they have only basic knowledge of German”.

He believes that Ukrainians will be able to master the language at a sufficient level not only in classes but also directly at work, and he wants to discuss this issue with representatives of the German economy on Monday, 20 November.
At the same time, Heil noted that 100,000 Ukrainians have already completed integration language classes in Germany, and 100,000 more will do so in the near future. The same applies to another 200,000 people from other countries of origin who can work.
“The job centres will invite them at shorter and more regular intervals in order to provide them with as many targeted job offers as possible and to support them on their way to employment,” Heil added.
Background:
- Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, more than a million people from Ukraine have sought protection in Germany.
- According to government data, in July, there were about 196,600 employed Ukrainian citizens in Germany, of whom 154,600 were paid social security contributions and 42,000 were employed in low-paid or part-time jobs.
- As of September, there were 205,970 unemployed Ukrainians in Germany.
